Road transportation, while indispensable for moving people and materials, presents significant safety challenges. Vehicle incidents often lead to property loss, injuries, and fatalities. Recognising the gravity of these risks, Cairn’s RJ-North Projects initiated a comprehensive Vehicle-Pedestrian Interaction Safety Campaign as part of its December 2024 Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) efforts.

This campaign, held from December 7 – 17, aligned with Vedanta’s December Safety Theme and aimed to educate, train, and enforce road safety practices among the workforce. Emphasising awareness and preventive measures, the campaign sought to minimise the risk of road transport-related hazards—a priority area identified as a fatal risk event in our operations.

This comprehensive campaign kicked off with a highly engaging roadshow that traversed the entire RJ-North region, visiting key locations such as MPT, MWP, SRP, AWP, BWP, and the OB Township. The roadshow, inaugurated by Cairn Construction HSE Manager and HAL Offshore team members at MWP-05, featured informative displays and interactive sessions, educating employees on critical road safety measures.

Beyond the roadshow, the campaign included dedicated “Breakout Sessions” for mobile equipment operators and drivers at Mangala, Aishwarya, and Bhagyam fields. These sessions, facilitated by Cairn RTSO 04, engaged over 120 personnel, emphasising safe driving practices and responsible road usage.

Road Safety in India: The Bigger Picture

The campaign also highlighted alarming statistics about road safety in India:

  • – 168,491 fatalities and 443,366 injuries were reported from 461,312 road crashes last year.
  • – 47 accidents and 18 deaths occur every hour.
  • – Primary causes include over-speeding (74.4%), wrong-side driving (4.3%), drunken driving (2.3%), and mobile phone use (1.6%).
  • – Vulnerable groups include two-wheeler riders (40.7%), light motor vehicle occupants (19.7%), and pedestrians (13.3%).

The campaign garnered significant participation from across the workforce, with over 1200 personnel attending awareness sessions throughout the month. Recognising the importance of employee engagement, the team also acknowledged the contributions of business partners by recognising and awarding 40 staff members and workers for their commitment to road safety. By prioritising employee safety and fostering a culture of responsible road usage, the team is taking proactive steps to minimise risks and create a safer working environment for all.
