In a major step towards strengthening India’s energy security and fostering strategic industry collaboration, Cairn has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to jointly develop the Jantapathar Gas Field of Upper Assam Shelf South Block, A&AA Basin. This initiative marks a significant push toward early monetisation of resources in the North-East region.
At Cairn, we believe in harnessing partnerships that drive national progress. The signing of this MoU underscores our shared commitment with ONGC to unlock the immense hydrocarbon potential of the Assam-Arakan (A&AA) Basin. Located in the Upper Assam Shelf South Block, the JP-1Z discovery well holds promise for boosting domestic gas production and bringing energy closer to communities. This collaboration not only strengthens regional energy infrastructure but also accelerates India’s journey towards self-reliance in natural gas.
With the A&AA Basin holding significant promise for India’s energy future, this collaboration was set to play a pivotal role in enhancing domestic gas output and supporting the nation’s energy security goals.
The MoU was formalised in the presence of key leaders from both organisations, Arunangshu, Director (Strategy & Corporate Affairs), ONGC; OP Sinha, Director – Exploration, ONGC; Rakesh Agiwal, Chief Policy and Regulatory Officer; and Mandeep Narang, Chief Production Officer from Cairn underscoring the shared vision of strengthening India’s hydrocarbon infrastructure and creating a sustainable energy ecosystem through innovative and impactful collaborations.
As Cairn continues to deepen its commitment to exploration and production in India’s most promising basins, the alliance with ONGC at Jantapathar marks yet another milestone in its journey towards becoming a key contributor to the country’s energy independence.
