As India continues its energy security and self-reliance journey, the country’s North-eastern region is emerging as a key player in the nation’s energy landscape. Rich in untapped natural resources, Assam and its surrounding areas are poised to become a critical hub for oil and gas production. With more than 100 oil fields and an estimated 200 million metric tons of crude oil reserves, this region accounts for 14% of India’s crude oil output, 10% of total natural gas production, and 50% of the nation’s onshore oil and gas production.
Cairn is at the forefront of harnessing this potential and is leading an aggressive exploration and development campaign in the region. The Assam-Arakan Basin, in particular, remains a largely untapped reservoir, with an estimated 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) still to be discovered. This positions the North-eastern frontier as a potential hydrocarbon powerhouse for India.
In the past month, Cairn has successfully spudded wells in Assam’s Naginijan and Jagun regions. Most recently, drilling operations commenced at Bokajan, using advanced modular rig technology, thanks to our partnership with Kiri Group. These developments mark significant progress in unlocking the region’s vast hydrocarbon reserves.
As we continue our exploration and development activities, we remain committed to transforming Assam into a significant energy hub for the country. Stay tuned for further updates on our journey to fully realise the hydrocarbon potential of this promising region.
Stay tuned for more updates on this.
