As we celebrate Mangala Day, it’s hard to believe that just 15 years ago, the Thar Desert was a silent witness to a transformative moment in India’s energy landscape. On August 29, 2009, a groundbreaking discovery turned Barmer from a seemingly endless stretch of sand into a vibrant hub of energy and innovation. The first gush of oil from Mangala wasn’t just a technical achievement; it was the beginning of a remarkable journey that has reshaped the socio-economic landscape and the lives of the people in this region.
What began as a daring venture into the arid wilderness, flourished into a world-class operation. Over the past year alone, Mangala has made headlines with several key achievements.
In May 2024, we successfully commenced one of the largest commercial Alkalyine Surfactant Polymer (ASP) injection in India, an impressive milestone that showcases our commitment to technological advancement and efficient resource recovery.
Our operations now include sophisticated digital tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to refine our processes further, ensuring we remain at the peak of the industry.
The impact of these advancements is felt far beyond the oil fields. Our operations have contributed USD 26 billion to the national and state revenue, and with cumulative production exceeding 749 million barrels, Mangala continues to be a cornerstone of India’s energy security.
But our efforts extend beyond just oil extraction. We’re making strides in maintaining the highest standards of workforce safety. We achieved 100% compliance with leading safety indicators, maintaining a record of “Zero” fatalities and just one lost-time injury (LTI), resulting in a lost-time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) of 0.05, significantly better than our target of 0.15. Our commitment to safety is further demonstrated by installing 95 artificial intelligence-based safety monitoring cameras across RJ North assets. Advancing in our water management initiative, RJ North asset has a Net Positive Water Index (NPWI) of 1.13.
The Rajasthan block has become a model of sustainability with initiatives that not only conserves but also contributes to the local community through educational and skill development programs. Our digital education platform, E-Kaksha, has benefited 14 million students by FY 2024, surpassing our target of reaching approximately 9 million students by 2030. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Cairn’s ESG commitments under the Transforming Communities pillar.
Our collective efforts have not only turned the sands of Barmer into a symbol of progress but have also paved the way for a future driven by innovation, responsibility, and excellence.
Here’s to continuing our journey, inspired by our vision and mission, towards a sustainable and energy-independent future.
