Hi, I’m Honey Shah, part of the Site HR team at RJ North, and I’m here to take you on an adventurous journey to the unseen beauty of India, Sikkim.

In April 2024, I embarked on an extraordinary trip to Sikkim, a journey that began with unexpected challenges. Our self-driving car was cancelled, forcing us to adapt our plans quickly. However, this minor setback was soon overshadowed by the vibrant and colourful world of Sikkim.

The next day, during a walking tour, I was mesmerised by the kaleidoscope of colours. The city’s impeccable cleanliness, with designated smoking areas and excellent waste management practices, were among the many things that stood out. Amidst this beauty, I learned about the devastating floods of October 2023, which caused significant damage and loss of life. The resilience of the people in the face of such adversity was truly inspiring.

Riding a bike through the clouds and exploring stunning locations like Lachung, at 9,500 feet above sea level, and Nathula Pass, at 14,140 feet, was both exhilarating and humbling. The breathtaking views and the warmth and helpfulness of the locals, especially in areas without cell service, underscored the importance of community.

I was particularly fascinated by the households, often run by women, that seamlessly blended tradition with modern life. Traditional chimneys coexisted with home-run businesses, showcasing a perfect harmony of old and new. Learning about the frequent Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), exacerbated by development and poor infrastructure, highlighted the urgent need for sustainable development and living in harmony with nature. Nepal’s approach to addressing similar catastrophic events stands as a prime example of innovative, sustainable infrastructure practices.

This journey taught me invaluable lessons about adapting to new situations, the strength of communities, and the importance of protecting our environment for future generations.
